Jerusalem born Rachel Azaria began her activism with Israel's leading environmentalist movement, Green Course. Rachel would later concentrate on halachic matters of women, such as pushing for the rights of women seeking a "get" or Jewish divorce. This married mother of two then shifted her focus to direct public service by running for, and winning, a seat on Jerusalem's City Council in 2008.
Rachel Azaria
Years before becoming a Councilwoman, Rachel Azaria stood in the scorching heat for weeks. Self-inflicted torture? One might say so, but for Rachel it was ideology that drove her to stand on sidewalks for days on end in the relentless pursuit of signatures. Such is the life of a grassroots activist, petition in hand. Even though she won this battle with city hall (getting a mass transit system approved), she found that the power of the pen is most effective inside the halls of government rather than outside.
